FAQ – Foreign Degree Recognition
*BEFORE APPLYING*
1. What is foreign degree recognition?Answer: It is the process through which a Brazilian public higher education institution certifies the equivalence of an undergraduate or graduate degree obtained abroad to a degree offered in Brazil at the same academic level and in the same or an equivalent field of study.
2. How do I apply for recognition of an undergraduate degree at UFSC?
Answer: With the exception of undergraduate degrees in Medicine, applications for undergraduate degree recognition at UFSC must be submitted through the Ministry of Education (MEC)’s Carolina Bori Platform. The unit responsible for receiving and managing applications submitted to UFSC is the Administrative Office Service (SEEXP) of the Student Administration Department (DAE).
3. How do I apply for recognition of a graduate degree at UFSC?
Answer: Applications for graduate degree recognition at UFSC must also be submitted through the MEC’s Carolina Bori Platform.
However, the unit responsible for graduate degree recognition at UFSC is the Prorectorate for Graduate Studies (PROPG). Further information and contact details are available at: https://propgen.ufsc.br/internationalization-coordination-office/degree-recognition/
4. How can I determine whether my degree is compatible with a degree program at UFSC?
Answer: It is the sole responsibility of the applicant to verify the compatibility between the curriculum of the foreign degree program and the degree program they intend to have recognized as equivalent at a Brazilian university. The decision regarding the professional field and the choice of university rests with the applicant, who must consider the programs offered in Brazil, their area of interest, the possibility of recognition, and the availability of places (as indicated on the Carolina Bori Platform).
Even if the name of the applicant’s degree program exactly matches the name of a degree program offered at UFSC, applicants are strongly advised to consult the UFSC curriculum to verify whether there are sufficient similarities to allow for equivalence recognition. This helps avoid payment of the analysis fee when there is little or no likelihood of recognition.
However, the final decision regarding approval or denial of recognition rests exclusively with the Degree Recognition Committee appointed to carry out the substantive analysis of the application. The decision must then be approved by the Program Council and the Undergraduate Studies Council.
Consult the list of UFSC undergraduate degree programs and check their curricula at: https://prograden.ufsc.br/a-z-undergraduate-programs-list/.
5. Does the recognition of undergraduate degrees in Medicine follow a simplified procedure?
Answer: No. UFSC, like other higher education institutions (HEIs) in Brazil, has signed an institutional adherence agreement with the National Institute for Educational Studies and Research Anísio Teixeira (INEP) regarding participation in the National Examination for the Recognition of Medical Degrees Issued by Foreign Higher Education Institutions (REVALIDA).
According to this agreement, applicants seeking recognition of a foreign undergraduate degree in Medicine in Brazil must take the REVALIDA exam. If approved, applicants may select UFSC as the recognizing institution through INEP. After receiving the list of successful applicants who selected UFSC, the University contacts them to continue the degree recognition process.
6. What are the fees for undergraduate degree recognition?
Answer: The analysis fee (required to initiate the process) and the registration fee (payable only if recognition is granted) are updated annually in accordance with Normative Resolution No. 37/2025/CC. Currently, the fees are:
- R$ 1,800.00 for the substantive analysis; and
- R$ 200.00 for registration of the Recognition Certificate.
7. Do I need to translate my documents?
Answer: Documents written in English, French, or Spanish do not require translation. For other languages, a sworn translation of all documentation is required.
8. How should I sign the UFSC degree recognition application form?
Answer: The application form can be signed either physically (by hand) or digitally (through gov.br).
*HOW TO APPLY*
1. How do I apply for undergraduate degree recognition at UFSC?Answer: Applications must be submitted to UFSC through the Carolina Bori Platform. Access the platform here.
If you do not find the desired or equivalent degree program among those available for recognition at UFSC, this means that either UFSC does not offer the program or there are currently no places available for recognition in that program.
In this case, you may choose another university or wait until a new place becomes available at UFSC, which occurs only after completion of an ongoing recognition process in the same degree program.
2. What should I do if I experience difficulties submitting my application or using the Carolina Bori Platform?
Answer: UFSC accesses the Platform as a recognizing institution, which differs from the applicant access profile.
Applicants seeking assistance should consult the Applicant Guide available on the Platform or contact the MEC support team through the following channels:
Email: carolinabori@mec.gov.br
Telephone: +55 0800-616161
3. Does UFSC accept submission of documentation by email to open a recognition process?
Answer: No. UFSC does not accept submission of documentation by email for opening a degree recognition process. All documentation must be submitted via the Carolina Bori Platform.
4. Can I send my documents to SEEXP/DAE for a preliminary analysis in order to expedite my process?
Answer: No. UFSC does not provide preliminary document analysis and or advisory opinions regarding the likelihood of approval of the recognition application.
It is the applicant’s responsibility to organize all documentation in accordance with the instructions available on this website.
After securing a place and submitting the documentation through the Platform, applicants will have a period to reorganize the documentation (with the assistance of the staff member who receives their application) and to submit any missing documents. This time frame corresponds to the pre-analysis stage.
5. I am on the waiting list. How long will I have to wait for my documents to be analyzed?
Answer: There is no maximum waiting period. As ongoing processes are completed, the system releases new places, respecting the University’s service capacity. Applicants on the waiting list receive priority access to newly available places.
However, the time spent on the waiting list is not counted toward the deadlines established by applicable legislation and does not guarantee analysis by the HEI, but only creates an expectation of future analysis.
*DURING THE PROCESS*
1. What are the stages and timelines of the degree recognition process?Answer: First, the applicant must apply for undergraduate degree recognition at UFSC through the Carolina Bori Platform and submit all required documentation.
UFSC has up to 30 academic days to carry out the pre-analysis of the documentation. The next stage consists of scheduling, by email, the presentation of the original documents for verification and authentication.
After this stage, the applicant pays the analysis fee and the recognition process is formally opened at UFSC. A Degree Recognition Committee is then appointed to conduct the substantive academic analysis.
The maximum period for completion of the process is 180 academic days, counted from the date the process is formally opened.
2. What is the pre-analysis stage?
Answer: The pre-analysis consists of verifying the authenticity and evidentiary validity of the submitted documents, ensuring compliance with the legal requirements applicable to the process.
It is important to note that the pre-analysis is not a consulting service, although the department will provide guidance whenever possible to assist applicants in submitting documents in the legally required format.
3. What is the deadline for submitting supplementary documents?
Answer: During the pre-analysis stage, applicants have up to 60 academic days to submit supplementary documentation.
If you are unable to submit the requested documents within this period, you may request, by email, suspension of the process for an additional 90 academic days.
4. I cannot appear in person at UFSC to present my original documents. What should I do?
Answer: You may appoint an authorized representative to present your original documentation at UFSC.
In this case, in addition to the required documents, the representative must also present the original signed power of attorney and their personal identification document.
Access the Power of Attorney template here.
5. How can I track the progress of my degree recognition process?
Answer: After the process is formally opened, UFSC sends the protocol number and the website address for monitoring administrative processes by email.
In addition, UFSC uploads documents related to the process and the final decision to the Carolina Bori Platform for monitoring by the applicant and notification to the Ministry of Education (MEC).
6. How do I pay the analysis fee?
Answer: Payment is made through a Federal Revenue Collection Slip (Guia de Recolhimento da União – GRU), generated by the applicant using the link available on this website.
The GRU may be paid via PIX, credit card, or bank slip.
Attention: Payment must only be made after approval of the pre-analysis stage and the presentation of the original physical documents.
7. What are the possible outcomes of my degree recognition application?
Answer: After analysis by the Degree Recognition Committee, there are three possible outcomes:
Full approval: no supplementation is required, and the applicant will receive the Recognition Certificate upon payment of the registration fee.
Partial approval (with supplementation): recognition will be granted provided that the applicant fulfills the curricular supplementation requirements established by the Degree Recognition Committee. Depending on the Committee’s decision, applicants may be required to attend courses, complete internships, take examinations, or submit a final degree project/thesis. Only after fulfilling these requirements will the applicant receive the Recognition Certificate.
Rejection: In this case, the Committee concludes that the foreign degree program does not meet the minimum requirements for professional practice in Brazil or that there is insufficient equivalence between the foreign degree program and the corresponding UFSC program.
8. If the Degree Recognition Committee requires me to complete courses, must day be taken at UFSC?
Answer: The courses should preferably be taken at UFSC, since they correspond exactly to the curricular content identified for supplementation.
If you are unable to take the courses at UFSC, you may request authorization from the Committee to complete them at another institution. In this case, applicants are encouraged to submit the syllabus in advance for verification that it covers the required content.
